I have a 2.5 engine for the newer model Subaru Legacies/Foresters/Imprezas that are non turbo (2006 to 2012 [ones that use a timing belt--not a chain]) ($2200 plus $500 or a good core), and I also have a rebuilt long block for the older style similar model Subarus (96 to about 05, single or dual overhead cam) ($2200 plus $300 or a buildable core). These rebuilds are done by a machine shop. Blocks are bored out and have new pistons and rings, newly turned crankshaft and bearings. The heads are rebuilt to the extent needed to bring them up to factory specifications and also resurfaced. The head gaskets are FelPro triple layer steel design. This engine also comes with a brand new rear main seal and a six-month warranty. However, if the purchaser runs the engine out of oil or coolant or overheats the motor and destroys it or warps the heads before stopping the engine, or rides the clutch and destroys the thrust bearing, then this invalidates the warranty. Warranty covers engine only, not the labor. The purchaser will provide all timing components, water pump, oil pump, seals and gaskets.
