Why would you want to buy this barrel feeder DIY kit when other people sell completed barrel feeders?
Two reasons: water and waste.
Water: My feeder port does an excellent job at keeping water out of the food. The hood is 3.5" long, and it has an anti-drip lip on the inside edge to prevent water from trickling into the food.
The leading selling port (the kind you screw in) has a 1" hood, and there is no lip on the inside edge.
Waste: This feeder port is the best one for stopping waste. It has a long body that chickens need to lean into to reach the food. It also has a lip on the outside edge of the port that blocks food from spilling out.
The leading selling feeder port has the opening for the food right inside the hole in the barrel. The food is all right up front, so it's easy for the chickens to waste. In addition, the leading feeder port has no lip to prevent food from spilling out.
NOTE: If you are using feed with a mix of whole grains, the chickens will still find a way to waste it, no matter which port they use.

I'm a chicken mom myself who designed this port with two goals in mind: keep water out and keep food in. I've been iterating the design since 2019, spending tens of thousands of dollars. It works!
In a 3-day waste test against the leading selling feeder port, my port wasted 2.1 oz (over the three days). The leading selling port wasted 26.2 oz--TWELVE TIMES MORE!
Making this feeder is as easy as it looks (SEE VIDEO: https://youtu.be/GiQ5omNPyXs ). All you need is a barrel and a drill. I should have barrels at my home you can use ($10).
If you get a 16 gallon barrel, like the one pictured, it will hold 90 lbs of feed or more, and measures roughly 24" tall and 14" wide.
The feeder port bends at a 90 degree angle, but the inside of the port is smooth on their necks--no sharp points.
Plan on about 4 chickens per port, so it can feed up to 16 chickens. It comes with four feeder ports with an option of adding two more.
These do a great job of keeping out mice, but not rats. If you want to close the ports off at night, I can provide you with feeder port covers at no additional charge. It also usually keeps wild birds out, although they have been known to figure it out.
Q: How old do chickens need to be to use this?
A: Chicks should be at least 12 weeks old to use this feeder. Always make sure to watch when they first eat to make sure they don't fall in.
Q: What if my chickens are small? Can they reach?
A: You can put a few bricks or paver stones underneath a port as a stepstool for silkies or polish or bantams. All chickens can reach.
Q: How do I train my chickens to use this?
A: Fill the feeder with feed, and then pull some with your hand both on the edge AND inside the body of the tube. Make it really easy for them to get to the food at first, and then they'll know how to reach in after that.
Q: Do you have a waterer to match?
A: YES! I have matching barrel waterer kits ($12) that use Columbus Aqua nipples (DO NOT LEAK...EVER). The default is four nipples, but you can also request autofill cups.
Q: What if my chickens are having a hard time figuring it out?
A: No problem. Message me and I'll walk you through tips and tricks. They will all learn.
Q: Can I use this for other poultry?
A: Yes! Ducks, Geese, pheasants, and peafowl have all used this feeder successfully. It may not be wide enough for male turkeys. It's too big for quail.
Q: Does this keep out wild birds?
A: Yes...but not 100% of the time. It does deter wild birds, but occasionally they figure it and fly down into the ports.
Q: Do you offer anything ready-made?
A: Yes, I offer a white 6.5 gallon ready-made feeder that holds 35 lbs. and a matching waterer.
I have sold thousands of feeders and waterers with my business called Revolutionary Chicken LLC. I take care of my customers and guarantee that this will work for you. If not, I will refund you at any time. I always get repeat business and customer referrals.
