This card is 8 x 10 inches, about 1/10 inch thick, made of laminated layers of cardboard, clean and flat, with no scuffs or scratches, and with uniform appearance on both matte, non-glare surfaces.
If you're photographing food, products, or people, then a gray card is very helpful. You move close to your subject, take a gray card reading, and then rely on it for a shooting session. Gray cards are used in these situations to help accurately reproduce the colors during post-processing and printing.
To use, place the gray card in the scene, point a reflective light meter at the center of the card and take a reading. Recommended practice is to verify that the meter reading from the gray card matches the shooting setting, typically determined with an incident light meter. In most cases (if the gray card reflects the key light of the subject) the two readings will be close.
The gray side (18% reflectance) is used in good light. In low light, the white side (90% reflectance) is used and exposure is adjusted by a factor of 5 (2 1/3 stops).
In short, using a gray card with a reflective light meter is a good substitute for an incident light meter.
