This 5.3-gallon waterer will keep your chickens' water nice and clean. I switched from making these from regular 5-gallon buckets because the plastic of these is thicker and higher quality. Haven't had a problem with algae with these. The lid is also hinged, allowing for super easy filling.
Most waterers come with either cups or nipples. The reason I like to do both is that both have good points. Chickens probably prefer to drink out of the autofill cups (and ducks). On the other hand, the nipples are great, because they will work in the winter (if you use a heater). The chickens will ignore the cups and will use the nipples when the cups freeze overnight. That's why I like to include both. If you prefer to use just nipples or just cups, I can certainly accommodate that.
This brand of nipples is the best you can buy--made by Columbus Aqua manufactured in Denmark (not China). They are guaranteed not to leak. On CarolineCoops.com, the same ones sell for $5 per nipple.
Chickens get the water out by bumping the center post of the nipples (they will learn, don't worry). The autofill cup is always filled with water, so no learning necessary. To clean out the autofill cup, just twist it upside down.
A heater (available for $12) will keep the water flowing through the nipples. I have the heater customized to use no more than 25 watts. That way it won't melt the plastic of the waterer. They keep the nipples working until about 8 or 9 degrees F.
To train your chickens to use this waterer, the most important thing is to teach your chickens when they are thirsty. Then press the center of the nipple repeatedly so water drips down. The chickens will drink the small amount of water in the trough. As they do this, their beaks will touch the center post, releasing more water.
Make sure to check out my matching waste-proof, rainproof, mouse-proof chicken feeder as well ($58 for both). Since this is a small business, I have to charge sales tax. Buy with confidence! I have sold over 1000 waterers since 2019, and I have never had any chickens not able to figure out the nipples. They will get it. I always say that my chicken feeder will save you money, but my waterer will change your life. Clean water, and NO MORE CONSTANT REFILLING! That's a game-changer. Yes, I can ship ($15). If you get the matching feeder as well, shipping is $15 for both of them.
