A fine late 19th to early 20th century chryselephantine sculpture by French sculptor Eugène Bernoud (active late 19th/early 20th century).
This elegant work depicts a refined lady of the 18th century in an elaborate gown with finely detailed ruffled trim. The figure’s face and hands are delicately carved from ivory, while her dress and base are cast in gilt bronze, mounted on a square variegated marble plinth. The piece is signed E. Bernoud on the back of the bronze.
Condition Very good antique condition overall, consistent with age. Light patina and wear to the gilding. The ivory shows natural age lines/shrinkage cracks (particularly at the neck and hair), which is typical and expected in authentic antique chryselephantine sculptures. Base intact with no chips.
Notes - This piece exemplifies Bernoud’s mastery in combining bronze with carved ivory, a technique popular among French sculptors of the Belle Époque. Comparable works by Bernoud have appeared at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Hindman, and European auction houses.
