Why buy a blue barrel feeder from Revolutionary Chicken?
· Less refilling
· Less waste. When tested against generic feeder ports that you screw in, the Revolutionary Chicken Feeder ports wasted 12X less. I used mash purchased at Leland Mills for this test. Whole grain feed tends to generate more waste.
· Mouse Proof. I tested a feeder with five wild mice for a month, and the mice did not get in. Also doesn’t waste as much as traditional feeders, reducing the mouse-attraction factor.
· Rain proof
Ø The feeder port has a long hood plus a lip on the inside to prevent any water from sliding into the feeder.
Ø A gasket around the edge of the feeder prevents water from seeping in where they connect.
· Can feed up to 16 chickens (two more ports can be added to feed 24). If you have 5-9 chickens, you might want the smaller 6.5 gallon feeder.
· Optional feeder port covers available upon request
· Worry-free vacation!
Q&A about the Feeders
Q: How do I train my chickens to use this feeder?
A: Reach into the port with your hand and pull up the feed into the body of the port and also on the edge so it’s very easy for them to find it. Consider using treats like scratch, corn, or mealworms when they start. After doing this once, they’ll get it.
Q: How soon can chickens use this feeder?
A: This type of feeder can be dangerous for chickens that are not fully grown. They can topple into the ports and not be able to get out. They should be safe to eat from this after 12 weeks, but make sure to watch them as they start to verify they aren’t in falling in.
Q: Can rats get into this feeder?
A: Yes, they can. If you have an issue with rats, make sure to request feeder port covers
Q: Can wild birds get into this feeder?
A: Yes, they can…but they usually don’t. This feeder usually stops wild birds from eating your chicken feed, but occasionally a few still figure it out and fly down into the ports.
Q: Is this feeder really waste proof?
A: Technically speaking, no. I ran a test on these ports for three days, and seven chickens were able to waste 2.1 oz of feed, but compared to the 26.3 oz wasted using the generic feeder ports, I called it a success. I used mash feed for the test. I do not recommend using whole grain feed with this feeder—the chickens will waste a lot no matter which port they use as they try to get their favorite pieces. If you want to use a whole grain feed, I recommend the Revolutionary Chicken Rain Gutter Feeder.
Why buy a blue barrel waterer from Revolutionary Chicken ?
· Less refilling
· No algae (can’t grow because the waterer is opaque)
· Water stays completely clean
· Nipples are made by Columbus Aqua in Denmark and are guaranteed not to leak for as long as you use them (these same nipples sell on CarolinaCoops.com for $5/ea)
· Comes with a 2” removable plug on the top for easy filling with a hose
· Worry-free vacation!
Q&A about the waterers:
Q. Can I get a heater with this?
A. A heater can be purchased separately for $12. The heater goes underneath the waterer, and will keep the nipples thawed down to about 9˚ F.
Q: Can I add extra nipples?
A: Yes, two more can be added on the opposite side for a max of six. Additional nipples are $2 each.
Q: Can I get autofill cups instead of nipples? The default is nipples, but you can request cups instead. Cups will get dirt in them, so they need to be cleaned. They also will freeze in the winter, and a heater will not keep them thawed.
Q: What if my chickens can’t learn to use the nipples?
A: All chickens can learn to use the nipples. The key to training chickens to use the nipples is to teach them when they are thirsty so they are motivated to learn. Remove all sources of water and wait a few hours. Then, press on the center of the nipple so water drips down. As they drink from the tiny trough, they will move the center post, which releases more water.
Q: What was in the barrels?
A: I repurpose these barrels from a company that makes plant-based powder supplements. They are food-safe, and I do wash them out.
Q: Can I purchase the feeder and waterer separately?
A: Yes! The feeder is $60 and the waterer is $40.
