FIVE REASONS you should buy a blue barrel feeder from Revolutionary Chicken
When tested against generic feeder ports that you screw in, the Revolutionary Chicken Feeder ports wasted 12X less. I used mash for this test.
I tested a feeder in a totes bin with five wild mice for a month, and the mice did not get in. Also it doesn't attract mice like other feeders do because feed doesn't spill out of it like other feeders.
The feeder port has an extra-long hood to keep water out, plus it has a lip on the inside to prevent any water from sliding into the feeder. Also, each port has a gasket that prevents water from seeping in where they connect.
Holds 90 lbs and can feed up to 16 chickens (two more ports can be added to feed 24). You can go on vacation and not worry about feeding your chickens! (If you have 5-8 chickens, you might want the smaller 6.5 gallon feeder).
Q&A about the Feeders
Q: How do I train my chickens to use this feeder?
A: Reach into the port with your hand and pull up the feed into the body of the port and also on the edge so it’s very easy for them to find it. Consider using treats like scratch, corn, or mealworms when they start. After doing this once, they’ll get it.
Q: How soon can chickens use this feeder?
A: This type of feeder can be dangerous for chickens that are not fully grown. They can topple into the ports and not be able to get out. They should be safe to eat from this after 12 weeks, but make sure to watch them as they start to verify they aren’t in falling in.
Q: Can rats get into this feeder?
A: Yes, they can. If you have an issue with rats, make sure to request feeder port covers
Q: Can wild birds get into this feeder?
A: Yes, they can…but they usually don’t. This feeder usually stops wild birds from eating your chicken feed, but occasionally a few still figure it out and fly down into the ports.
Q: Is this feeder really waste proof?
A: Technically speaking, no. I ran a test on these ports for three days, and seven chickens wasted 2.1 oz of feed after three days. In the same duration, the feeder with generic ports wasted 26.3 oz (more than 12X more).
Q: What type of feed can I use?
A: Any chicken feed except feed with whole grains. Chickens will waste a lot with whole grains no matter which port they use as they try to get their favorite pieces. If you want to use a whole grain feed, I recommend the Revolutionary Chicken Rain Gutter Feeder.
Q: Is there a matching waterer? YES! See my other listings. The set together is $100.
