Gale Eugene Sayers, a Chicago Bears halfback and return specialist, played in the NFL from 1965–1971. Injuries limited his playing time to five seasons. In college, his running style earned him the nickname “Kansas Comet”. Sayers attended Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska, where he excelled in football and track and field. At the University of Kansas, he led the Jayhawks in most offensive categories from 1962–1964 and was named an All-American twice.
