PayPalI’m the original owner of these Vandersteen Model 5’s, purchased when they were Richard Vandersteen’s flagship offering. They have been a joy to listen to.
Because I love this model design so much, I recently purchased a pair of Model 5A Carbons, the latest advancement of this model series, and was frankly surprised at how little improvement there actually was. Had I known, I would have kept these original 5’s and lived happily ever after. With this in mind, I can’t imagine how you could buy anything that sounds better at the asking price.
I’ve rated their condition as “Average” (5/10) because of age, but they rate in sound quality as 10/10. They were purchased with oak veneers but had new cherry veneers installed a few years ago. On closer inspection, the cut edges on the backside around the termination plate, amplifier section and subwoofer grill are not factory perfect, as you can see in the pictures. The cherry skins are in good condition except for a little wear on the front bottom corners where the vacuum hose rubbed against them before we realized and stopped it.
I recently applied an oil-based polish, and the bottom edge of the panels absorbed more of the oil, so they are a little darker. I also installed new grill cloths a few years ago, which remain in excellent condition. There is a small ding in one of the tweeters (as seen in the picture), but there is no audible difference in sound quality. The tweeter is easy to remove, so If desired, it can be shipped to Vandersteen Audio where they will rebuild it for less than $300.
Included with the speakers are a pair of external RCA single-ended M5 HP crossovers that connect between the preamp and amplifier. Both the external and internal crossovers are battery biased, and they can be shipped to Vandersteen for professional installation of new batteries.
Shipping weight is around 500 pounds, and they are shipped on a pallet in double boxes that are about 5 feet high, so depending upon where you live, the cost of shipping could be upwards of $2000. Shipping is at the buyer’s expense. Local pick up in American Fork, Utah, would be welcome.
