Betty is a four year-old Chihuahua mix, who came to us almost 2 years ago from a hoarding situation in Mountain Home. She was adopted for a little while, but was recently returned to us through no fault of her own, but we don’t give up on any of our fosters. So she is back in foster care with us and is once again looking for her Forever Home.
Betty has a few issues that she was born with, the most obvious being that she was born with no eyes. She also has some curvature in her legs, especially her back legs. This causes Betty to walk a little weird, and slow, but she does much better on non-slippery surfaces. However, none of these issues slow her down or make her any less affectionate.
Betty has learned how to navigate her new foster home with all of the rugs that are laid out. She also has become very affectionate and sweet. She loves to snuggle on the couch with you and lay her head on your lap. She will also occasionally play with toys when she is feeling a little rowdy and playful. She does give some play nibbles when she is excited, but that’s how she explores her world, and it’s never a really hard or serious nibble.
In her prior foster home and in her current foster home, she has lived with other dogs and cats. While she doesn’t necessarily interact and play with other animals, she is good around them as long as they give her space. Because she couldn’t see and had trouble physically moving around in the hoarding home, she struggled to get the food and water that she needed. So this has manifested with her being protective over her food and water, even when it’s abundant. This likely will be a lifetime behavior. We’ve not seen her get aggressive, but she does growl to warn others to leave her alone
Another thing we want you to know about Betty is that she is currently a little bit overweight, but has lost some pounds in the last two years. It would be in her best interest to continue to lose weight so that her legs can get strong and she can walk easier. Betty can sometimes startle easily so a home that understands that she needs to have her humans announce themselves and give commands about what is happening, so that Betty can learn to trust and understand what is happening around her. Lastly, Betty is on 3 medications for her arthritis, and Cushings disease. It all may seem like a lot, but she is so worth it. She really is a very sweet girl who would do well in a variety of homes, but we are looking for a very special one for her. If you think that she would be a good match for your home and you can provide her with the special care that she needs, please fill out an application today. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, and ready to keep your couch warm!
