Petals adjust to two positions. I added a rear derailleur protector for when your kid dumps the bike over on its side. Everything is tuned up, gears shift nicely and both brakes work. Tires are holding air with slime in both tires.
Bike also comes with spare brake parts.
Trek generally recommends the Precaliber 24 inch bikes for kids aged 8 to 12 years old, but it really depends on their height. They suggest riders be between 51 and 59 inches tall. My son felt comfortable moving on from this bike at approximately age 12.
