Solid wood antique rope bed with 4 heavy cannon ball and carved bell posts. These posts were carved by a master craftsman and are very ornate. The bed is constructed with Mortise and Tenon method which was used prior to the Revolution. The bed has been in the St. George area since Pioneer days and came out of an old barn in Hurricane, Utah were is had been stored for over 100 years before I purchased it many years ago. I believe this bed to be early Mormon furniture because of the construction and the fact that it still has remnants of a red wash stain that the early pioneers used after settling in the St George area. The bed has chunky cross rails with original holes that were used to wrap ropes around pegs in the bed frame to weave the rope from one side to the other. The mattress would have been held up by ropes which needed regualr tightening, hence the old saying "sleep tight". It measures 72" long and is 48" wide. The posts are 49" high.
