This is a vintage Chinoiserie-style painted wooden storage chest (also called a blanket box, trunk, or decorative box). Key Features • Black lacquered/painted finish with hand-painted floral and bird motifs in a traditional Asian-inspired (Chinoiserie) design — featuring peonies or similar flowers, leaves, birds in flight, and decorative scrollwork/borders. • Brass or metal hardware: Includes side handles for carrying, a circular lock plate (escutcheon) on the front, and likely interior hinges. • Rectangular hinged-lid design — typical for storage furniture meant to hold linens, blankets, clothing, documents, or general household items. • Visible wear, scuffs, and paint loss consistent with age and use. These chests were popular in the mid-20th century (often 1930s–1970s exports) or as later reproductions. They blend Western furniture forms with decorative Chinese/Japanese-inspired painting (birds, flowers, vases). The style is commonly called Chinoiserie. Likely Origin and Use • Probably made in Asia (China, Japan, or for the export market) or in the West as an imitation. • Originally used for storage in homes; today, people repurpose them as coffee tables, entryway benches, blanket chests, or decorative accent pieces.
This measures about 11” tall x 26.25” deep x 35.5” long. This is a fun project piece. Needs hinges and touch up. But what a lovely vintage find!!! Cash at pick up in Highland Lehi area.
