PayPalThese plants are fast-growing and will turn into trees up to 10’ tall if allowed and cared for. They are meant to grow in hardiness zone 9 or higher and require full sun to partial shade. In zones 6-7b it can be grown as an annual, so it will die off like tomatoes that are outside at the end of the season. They need to be protected from frost, but mature plants can survive if exposed to 32 degrees for a short period. They grow best at 60-85 degrees. Tamarillos do well in pots and can be overwintered inside in the basement, sunroom, or garage. At 40 degrees in a garage, the Dwarf Tamarillo will drop its leaves and go dormant, It only needs to be watered sparingly while dormant. When actively growing, they wilt quickly if their soil is allowed to become too dry.
The fruit they produce are a small grape size fuzzy fruit. They are a nightshade which makes them toxic if eaten when green. When ripe they are soft and a dark orange-yellow color, and are sweet with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Regular pruning can maintain a bushy shape, making it easier to harvest fruit from it.
One of the Tamarillos is in a fabric pot and approximately 2.5-3 ft tall ($40). The other three are in 3 gallon nursery pots. Two of them are approx. 2.5 ft tall ($45 each), and one is approximately 3.5 to 4 ft tall ($50). Text is best, no trades. Cash and Venmo accepted.
