The TI-85's solver is legendary among engineers from the 90s because of how it handles multivariable equations and formulas.

• The Interface: You type in a massive formula with as many variables as you want (e.g., A = P(1 + R/N)^(N*T)).
• Capabilities: The TI-85 automatically parses the equation and generates a menu button for every single variable on the screen. You simply fill in the numbers for the variables you know, move your cursor to the one you don't know, and press the SOLVE soft key. It is incredibly fluid for switching which variable you are solving for on the fly without rewriting anything.
• The TI-85 was designed for college-level engineering and calculus students, whereas the TI-84 Plus line was designed for high school algebra and AP tests. Because of this target audience, the TI-85 has a few native advantages:
• Simultaneous Equation & Matrix Solver: The TI-85 has a dedicated, built-in menu for solving systems of linear equations (up to 30 unknowns) and polynomial roots (up to 30th degree). On a standard TI-84 Plus, you have to manually use matrix operations (rref) or load an external Flash App (like PlySmlt2) to do this easily.
• Complex Number Integration: The TI-85 treats complex numbers (a+bi or polar coordinates) as standard data types. You can seamlessly use them in matrices, calculus functions, and vectors without changing modes constantly or hitting data limitations.
• Vector Mathematics: The TI-85 has native, dedicated support for 2D and 3D vectors (including dot and cross products), which are deeply buried or clunky to replicate on a TI-84 Plus.
• Variable Naming: The TI-85 allows you to name variables with up to 8 lowercase or uppercase characters (e.g., TOTAL, speed). The TI-84 Plus largely restricts you to single-character uppercase letters (A through Z).
