PayPalBeautiful old 4/4 violin labeled as Mathias Hornsteiner 1872. Professionally set up and ready to play with brand new Thomastik-Infeld Vision Solo strings for the G and D with an Evah Pirazzi Green for the A string that is a perfect match for this instrument.
Well used with honest play ware as can be seen in images. Inspection of the top shows no cracks or repairs made like, patches, or cleats just some scratches see images. Neck projection measures exactly 27 mm with a 34 mm bridge height, providing the correct string angle and excellent projection—unlike many vintage violins that suffer from low neck angles and reduced volume. String action at the end of the fingerboard measures 5 mm on the G string and 3.5 mm on the E string. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and condition report.
This violin is a great Mittenwald example of craftsmanship. Mathias Hornsteiner II was known as "Dax" died in 1803 was the most distinguished maker of the family. His son Mathias Hornsteiner III ‘Gratzs’ carried on making violins under the same name. A number of these reproductions were hand made using highly desired very tight grain wood for the top.
Tonally it has a very boisterous sound throughout the register. The G string is very; very low and powerful you can feel the violin resonating as you play it is a very dramatic sound. It is silky in the upper reaches of the bottom strings. Tonally it has a very boisterous sound throughout the register. You will not have to work hard to get the overtones to jump off this instrument.
