Solid wood antique rope bed with 4 heavy cannon ball and carved bell posts. These posts were carved by a master craftsman and are very ornate. The bed is constructed with Mortise and Tenon method which was used prior to the Revolution. It has been in the St George area since Pioneer times and came out of an old bard in Hurricane, Utah where it had been stored for over 100 years before I purchased it after moving here in the 1990's. I believe the bed to be early Mormon furniture because of the construction and the fact that it still has remnants of a red wash stain that many Mormon furniture makers used during the early days of settling here in the St. George area. The bed has chunky cross rails with original holes that were used to wrap rope around pegs in the bed frame to weave the rope from one side to the other. The mattress would have been held up by ropes which needed regular tightening, hence the old saying "sleep tight". It measures 72" long and is 48" wide. The posts are 49" high.
