VenmoLeo has been a wonderful boy and a great love of my life, and it breaks my heart to write this. Recently he’s become more guarded of his food and personal space and has bitten both my aunt and nipped my 10 month old baby.
We have owned and raised a St Bernard x English Mastiff mix, a Bull Mastiff x Rottweiler mix, and currently have another Rottie who is 6 years old. We are no strangers to raising large and powerful dogs and don’t make this decision lightly.
I want to be so up front and share the details with his biting. The first bite occured at my parent’s home. Leo was having a blast playing with my kids and my niece and nephew.
My aunt was a new friend and he was enjoying love and attention from her until my aunt put her arm around his shoulder and leaned in to give him more love. It was a very quick turn and snap that left a puncture on her cheek and a scratch under her eye. She said she did not feel him bite down, but we know how powerful they are, and obviously there was enough force to break the skin.
With my 10 Month old daughter we were distracted with helping my 3 year old son with a potty accident. We’ve never had issues with him being overly protective of his food, but our baby has recently started crawling. While we were helping our son our baby crawled her way to his food bowl. It was a dumb mistake on our part and we failed to keep him and our baby out of this situation. Guarding his food he nipped her face. He left her with two tiny scratches and a puffy lip. He did break the skin and we are so thankful it was not worse.
I truly believe Leo is not a vicious dog, and I am devastated and so upset with myself for opening the door to these situations. I think he would be a great buddy to someone without young children and someone who understands his needs. I hate blaming rehoming him on my kids, but I can’t rely on them to always respect his boundaries. In our phase of life there are so many in and out of our house and we want to keep him safe too.
If you’re still here, I would love to tell you all the GREAT things about Leo.
Prior to this he has been a WONDERFUL family dog. When my 7 and 3 year old are scared to go up or downstairs by themselves, they call Leo to go with them.
He’s best friends with my other male Rottie and looks up to him and has been submissive to him since day one. We’ve never had any trouble between them. In pictures/videos he is the smaller of the two. He also plays great with my sisters Golden Retriever and my brothers Great Danes. He hasn’t spent much time around small dogs, but if anything his size and excitement might overwhelm them.
He walks great on a leash. We use a prong collar and he has always been happy to have someone want to stop and pet him. We live near a high school and Rec Complex and we’ve walked by many kids and other dogs without issue.
We’ve taken him to our kids soccer games and he lays in the grass happy to tag along. He does seem a little nervous in the car but he’s an absolute goober and loves to be close to our family.
He follows my kids to the bathroom and hangs out with them when it’s bath time. He is horrible at fetch but tries anyways.
He loves water and sticks his face in front of sprinklers and my watering can when we’re out in the yard. We’ve never taken him to a river or lake, but I think he might die of happiness if he had the chance.
He does amazing with our dog sitter and is happy to see the neighborhood kids that come and go from our yard, however he does need to go to a child free home that understands the needs of this beautiful and smart but powerful breed.
He is a smart guy even though he seems like a goober. He knows how to open door handles that are levers over knobs, but locking the door is an easy fix. It’s never been a problem. We’ve just found him out front a couple times because of it.
We will include his XL crate, his bed, a new full size bag of his dog food to take with you, his prong collar and leash, as well as some of his favorite toys.
He is papered, nuetered and has had his dew claws removed. We are asking $250 because we want someone to be serious about him, but can be negotiable.
