Really interesting find for a collector of historical art, Jerusalem/Holy Land memorabilia, or David Roberts works.
This is a large 18” x 26” color print of David Roberts’ “Citadel of Jerusalem: Without the Walls,” based on Roberts’ famous 19th-century view of Jerusalem and the Tower of David.
⭐ HERE’S WHAT MAKES THIS ONE INTERESTING:
Weber State University’s Stewart Library Special Collections has another 18” x 26” example of this same David Roberts image in its archival collection (MSS-302).
That caught my attention because this is not the typical size commonly seen for the original Roberts/Haghe prints.
This example is also printed on a very unusual, extremely thin and flexible fibrous material with an almost cloth-like texture. I have included close-up photos so you can see the material and printing.
I have not determined the publisher, exact age, or specific edition, so I am selling it as an older reproduction rather than claiming it is an original 1840s lithograph.
However, considering that Weber State University preserves an example of this image in the same 18” x 26” format, there may be more to learn about this particular version. Great opportunity for someone who enjoys researching unusual historical prints.
Condition is as pictured, with age-related wrinkles, edge wear and some small tears.
Selling it as found. I’d rather let the next owner do the detective work than spend the next month going down the rabbit hole myself!
