Declutter your home for a New Year reset, then sell unused items for cash

Follow our decluttering tips for a clean start to the new year — and make some extra cash.

As a new year begins, many people feel inspired to make a fresh start. New year, new you! What better place to begin your reset than at home? Now is the perfect time to clear out all the things you no longer need so you can begin with a clean slate. And when you sell your items locally on KSL Classifieds, you can make extra cash as a bonus.

Why you should declutter

The longer you live in a home, the more stuff seems to accumulate. That once spacious closet slowly becomes a potential avalanche of coats, blankets and pillows. Your shelves begin to sag under the weight of books, games and puzzles. Sporting and camping equipment seems to spread to every corner. The junk drawer becomes junk drawers.

Tackle your decluttering project one small area at a time.

But how much of that stuff do you really use? Have the kids outgrown the bikes taking up precious space in the garage? Do you own clothes that no longer fit? Have you upgraded your phone/computer/headphones but still have the older ones lying around?

Decluttering made easy

When you think about decluttering, it can feel overwhelming. Where do you even begin? Instead of looking at your home as a whole, break it up. Plan to work on one room or area at a time — the kitchen, a hall closet or the garage, for example.

If it’s a large space, break it down even more. Instead of emptying every cupboard in the kitchen, start with one. Instead of cleaning your entire bedroom closet, focus on clearing out extra shoes, then sweaters, then shirts. Working in smaller chunks lets you see progress sooner, so you’ll stay motivated.

Get your family involved. It’s a great opportunity to teach your kids about cutting down on waste by selling or donating their used toys instead of sending them to a landfill. It’s never too early to learn that less is more.

Overcome the fear of letting go

Decluttering can simplify your life, but sometimes it’s hard to let go of your stuff. What if you might use it “someday”? What if you spent a lot of money on it?

Instead of worrying about what ifs or how much you paid for something, ask yourself if it serves a purpose right now. It’s OK to admit that you’ll never use that exercise bike again or learn how to play the guitar. Sell your items locally on KSL Classifieds to someone who wants them right now. It’ll help to know your gear will still get used, and it can be a relief to move on.

Still have separation anxiety? Experts suggest giving yourself a bit of time to emotionally distance yourself from your stuff before letting it go for good. Put items in a box, then set it aside in a corner or in the trunk of your car. After a couple of weeks, you’ll probably forget what was even in there.

Another trick: Try a 10-10-10 rule. Choose 10 things to keep, 10 to throw away and 10 to sell on KSL Classifieds. You can always get rid of more than that, but it’s a good way to start.

What to do with all your unused items

If your extras have a lot of life left in them, don’t throw them away. Instead, sell items locally to make extra cash. Maybe you don’t need your skis anymore, but you know another Utahn can definitely use them. Done with your wheat grinder? Someone interested in preparedness will appreciate it. Common items you might sell include:

  • Kitchen gadgets

  • Home decor

  • Clothing

  • Electronics

  • Games, books and other media

  • Baby gear and toys

  • Exercise equipment
