You could argue the bathroom is one of the hardest working rooms in the house. From bathing to teeth brushing, every day the entire family spends time in that one tiny space. After years of constant use, some upgrades may be in order. KSL has some bathroom renovation tips to help you do it.

Determine your bathroom remodel budget

Large or small, all bathroom upgrades will take a bit of cash. It’s easy to get caught up in fancy features, so it’s important to decide how much you can afford before starting your remodel. Then, create a budget.

The cost will vary based on your renovation goal. Do you want simple changes such as a new vanity and fixtures? Or are you hoping to transform it into a luxury suite?

The size of your room is also a factor — the bigger the room, the higher your cost. A powder room redo could be as little as $3,000, whereas a custom bath could be ten times that. Work that involves major rewiring or moving plumbing will significantly add to the price as well.

Make a budget for your bathroom renovation so you don't get carried away.

In general, expect a contracted bathroom remodel in Utah to cost:

  • $10,000-$20,000 for minor updates, such as fixtures, a vanity and paint.

  • $16,000-$30,000 to include flooring, lighting, fixtures and tile work.

  • $35,000 or more for luxury features such as custom showers.

As you budget, remember to factor in the cost of any required permits. Check with your city, but you’ll likely need permits if you’re doing any structural work or if the job involves plumbing or electrical changes. Also, as a “just in case,” include a line item for unexpected extras such as mold removal or water damage.

How to save on your bathroom remodel

If you have bigger dreams than your budget can comfortably afford, you may not have to settle as much as you think. Spend time comparing prices between materials and fixtures. This will help you decide between must-haves and nice-to-haves.

Perhaps you could splurge on the shower head if you can find a deal on the cabinetry, or you can afford the Japanese smart toilet if you opt for laminate flooring instead of tile.

Another way to save is to do some of the work yourself. In fact if you’re on a really tight budget, maybe you don’t need a whole do-over, just a glow up. Try simple DIY bathroom upgrades such as:

  • Hanging wallpaper or painting walls

  • Installing a prefabricated vanity

  • Hanging a new mirror

  • Replacing light fixtures

  • Swapping out taps

When to call a pro for your bathroom renovation

Of course you want to get the most out of your dollars when you’re undergoing an expensive, major remodel. But there are times when you shouldn’t be cutting costs. Some projects require a professional who has specialized training, such as local plumbers and tile installers, and it’s worth spending a little more for their expertise.

Electricians

You’ll want a pro for electrical projects such as moving switches or adding outlets. They can also install new light fixtures and fans to make your bathroom more comfortable. If you are adding high-end features, such as a heated towel rack, an electrician can install dedicated circuits so you won’t have issues with overloading.

Plumbers

If your Utah bathroom remodel includes changing the layout, hire a plumber to properly connect all the new pipework to your existing system. They can install advanced features, such as a jetted tub. A plumber can also address issues you’ve had with your old bathroom, such as low water pressure.

Tile work

Do you know what kind of grout to use? Will you have the proper waterproofing materials? Do you have a tile cutter? Hire a tile installer who has the expertise for the job so you don’t have costly mistakes later. They’ll have the tools to make all the precision cuts to give you a high-quality end result.

General contractor

If you have a major bathroom remodel in mind, consider hiring a general contractor. They can help you plan, arrange the subcontractors and oversee the entire project. If you feel like part of the project is not going as planned, they’ll look into it for you and make sure the work is finished to your satisfaction.

What to know before signing a bathroom remodeling contract

Don’t hire just any contractor for your Utah bathroom remodel. Verify that they are licensed and insured so you will be protected if there are problems. It’s also a good idea to check Google reviews, which are available on KSL Services listings. You can also ask for references from their last two or three jobs.

Before signing any contract, discuss all the details such as what work will be done and what materials will be used — and who will buy them. Determine beforehand who will be responsible for all aspects of the job, including the cleanup. Include the final price so there are no unexpected costs.
