When you’re looking into how to get your kids started skiing/snowboarding, you’ll quickly learn winter sports can be expensive, in part because it requires pricey equipment. You can’t ski down a hill without a pair of, well, skis.

But you don’t have to worry about high prices holding back your child’s dream. Search KSL Classifieds for used winter sports gear. You’ll find affordable equipment such as:

Pay less for Utah ski passes

Fortunately for your wannabe future Olympian, Utah has deals on ski passes for kids. Each year, Utah offers the Ski Utah Passport, where students from fourth to sixth grade can ski three times at each of Utah’s 15 resorts for less than $100.

Park City Mountain also offers the Epic SchoolKids Utah Pack, where kids from kindergarten through fifth grade can ski five times for free. A first-timer lesson is even included.

For the rest of the family, check KSL for deals on resale ski passes. Create a Saved Search so you’ll be notified when any are listed.

Ice skating in Utah

Whether it’s ice hockey, speed skating or figure skating, your child may suddenly feel the need to get on the ice. They can do all of the above right where skaters competed in the 2002 Winter Games — the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns. But really, they can try skating at any local rink and it will be just as fun.

You can rent skates at the venues, but if your new ice king/queen is going to stick with it, it might be worth investing in a pair of their own. Get them started with a gently used pair. When they grow out of them, as kids quickly do, you can feel good about buying a replacement.

Utah has several indoor and outdoor rinks where your kids can learn to ice skate.

Activities for Utah families

Even though your family is a great team, Winter Olympic team sports may not seem possible. There aren’t many luge tracks open around here. But there are other Utah winter activities your gang can do together.

Sledding

OK, there’s no bobsledding or skeleton track for regular folks, either. But you can all race down a hill at the same time on a sled or tube, which can be just as exciting. All you need is a steep slope and a sliding device for everyone in the family. Let the home games begin!

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing has been a Winter Olympic sport since the beginning, probably because it’s one that anyone can do — at any age. Your kids will be amazed that gliding in the snow actually takes some real skill, and they’ll love the chance to race ahead. But best of all, you can all enjoy the quiet, snow-blanketed trails in Utah’s mountains, far away from all the distractions.

You don't have to be an athlete to enjoy snowshoeing.

Snowshoeing

If you aren’t particularly athletic yourself, improvise so the whole family can participate. In the biathlon, for example, the athletes race on skis. You can take the less slick route and go snowshoeing instead. It’s still great strength training, but you don’t have to worry about tipping over.

Keep the Olympic flame alive

When the Olympic Games light a fire under your kids, take advantage of it. Encourage them to get out and try a new winter sport. And knowing you’ll find great deals on KSL on used winter sports gear, you don’t have to worry about it costing you the gold to outfit them.

Buying secondhand also helps sustain the outdoor community. Less gear gets sent to landfills, making winter sports more sustainable for future generations of families — and Olympians.
