Utah sports fans cheer at a football game.

1. Utah Jazz/BYU/University of Utah tickets and gear

Utah’s got game, and a lot of it. Whether it’s cheering for the Utah Jazz, Brigham Young University or the University of Utah — regardless of the sport — there are uber fans wherever you go. They’re easy to spot, even if there’s no tailgate party in sight. They sport logo-emblazoned T-shirts and hats, fly flags from their homes and vehicles, and sip soda from purple/blue/red bottles.

2. Crockpots

It’s not Sunday dinner in Utah if you don’t have a crockpot bubbling. Busy families live by the mantra “set it and forget it” while they run errands, attend soccer practices and drop kids off at dance and music lessons. From roasts to party dip, the mysterious cooking device is a must-have for feeding the crew. If you didn’t get one as a wedding gift, are you really married?

3. All-terrain vehicles

Mud on your pants, dirt in your teeth … ahh, the sweet taste of Utah mountains. You’ll find outdoor enthusiasts of all ages atop four-wheelers bouncing along the trails. Definitely a quick way to take in the quaking aspens, pristine lakes and colorful wildflowers. Roads? In Utah, you don’t need paved roads. (But please do stay on the designated dirt ones.)

4. RVs

You say recreational vehicle, Utahns say ready to vacation. With a major U.S. interstate running the length of the state, there’s a fair share of RV travelers cruising through. But they’re not all passers-by. You’ll also see plenty of Utah families headed to one of the national or state parks for spring break. Paired with all the snowbirds headed south for the winter, there’s plenty of road tripping going on around here.

5. Wake boats

Utah is a desert, you say? Locals say pshaw. Despite a landlocked location, there are a few oases to give water lovers a place to splash around. And Utahns don’t hesitate to use them. On any given weekend or holiday — or summer evening — you’ll see a bevy of boats bobbing in the blue, from Bear Lake to Sand Hollow Reservoir. Water skis? Check. Wakeboards? Check. Sunburn? Double check.

6. Rock chip repair services

It depends on your luck, of course, but chances are you have a few pits and chips in your car windshield. You know you’re a real Utahn when you get a big, crinkly one right in the middle of it. Because Utahns are frugal, they tend to opt for a quick fix instead of a complete replacement. Extra points if you have a rock chip repair service on your speed dial.

7. Food storage

It’s not that Utahns love food any better than the next state. They just want to make sure there is always something to eat. Drought? Flood? Tornado? Job loss? No problem. Utahns have their pantries lined with cans, buckets and water barrels so they can make a plate of lasagna while the world collapses.

8. Wedding decor and supplies

Utah leads the nation when it comes to weddings per year — some 24 new marriages per 1,000 people. That’s a lot of cake. That also means there’s a big demand for decor. Fortunately, you can rent most items, from tables to arches, candelabras to ceiling drapery. Much easier than trying to find a place to store 100 folding chairs.

Getting married? So are a lot of other Utahns.

9. Chickens

Rhode Island Reds. Plymouth Rocks. Speckled Sussex. Is this a geography quiz? Nope. As many of your Utah suburban neighbors can tell you, they’re some of the best chicken breeds to raise in your backyard. Are Utahns big farmers? Maybe not, but you shouldn’t be surprised to learn your neighbor used fresh eggs to make the cookies they brought over last weekend.

10. Skis and snowboards

Some things are just a given. Would anyone be surprised to hear Utahns have skis and snowboards taking up space in their garages? Of course not. The slogan “Greatest Snow on Earth” isn’t thrown around for nothing. They love snow days and aren’t ashamed to say it. It’s so fluuuffyyy.

11. Goldendoodles

Utah may not have an official state dog (no, the Utah prairie dog doesn’t count), but if it did, the goldendoodle would most likely be it. Who can resist all that curly fluff? In fact, the goldendoodle is the most popular breed sold on KSL Classifieds. They’re smart, they’re playful and they don’t shed too much. Kinda like having another kid.
