10 items every cat owner needs

Turn your home into a kitty dreamhouse, and protect your furniture while you’re at it.

Cats are known for their independence. And their keen ability to rebuff adults and children alike, when the mood suits. Yet, they can be so adorable when they nuzzle up to you and offer that gentle mew, as if to say, “Gee, I was just kidding. I’ll always love you.” Once you see those adorable whiskers and pet that silky, soft fur, there’s no going back. Bribe them for a few more of those moments — and protect your furnishings — with 10 cat owner must-haves.

1. Litter box

Unlike a dog, a cat won’t wake you up at 5 a.m. for a bathroom break. That fact, alone, should win the “which is better” debate. Anyway, you’ll need to set up a litter box in a quiet, low-traffic area (they prefer privacy, too) with easy access. Choose one that is low to the ground and large enough for your cat to turn around in — without touching the box itself. If you have a multi-level home, you may want a litter box on each level. This is particularly valuable if their primary box is unavailable (when someone closes the basement door, for example).

2. Food bowls

A cat’s other primary need — the same as yours — is food and water. Experts suggest bowls made of stainless steel because they are easy to clean and don’t retain odors. Ceramic and glass are also an option, providing they are in an area where they won’t get bumped and broken. Cats prefer their food and water bowls to be in separate locations (we did warn you they are finicky). Behaviorists suggest felines don’t like to smell their food while they’re drinking water, and they’re really grossed out when food particles get into it. Again, just like you.

3. Automatic feeder

Even though your cat could technically take care of itself, it will probably rely on you to keep the regular meals coming — especially if it lives within your four walls. Make sure it doesn’t miss dinner with the help of an automatic feeder. If you’re late coming home, or you are running late one morning, you can relax knowing your kitty will be just fine. A food dispenser can also help with portion control. ‘Cause fat cats aren’t healthy cats.

4. Scratching post

The only thing cats like better than lazing in the sun is scratching. Everything. If your pet lives mostly indoors, get a scratching post to save your sofa, wallpaper and door jams. Your pet isn’t trying to be obnoxious; scratching is actually a form of grooming. It loosens and removes the outer husk of their claws — a bit like sharpening a knife. It’s also the way cats stretch their spines and forelimbs so they are ready for the hunt. Even if that hunt is only for a rubber mouse.

5. Cat tree

If you have more than one cat, you may want a cat tree. Similar to a scratching post, it gives your pets a place to stretch and work their claws. The tree also gives them a place to play, nap and socialize. Look for one that mimics the shape of an actual tree, with different elevations.

6. Toys

We all need a little entertainment, and although Fluffly may love to snuggle to watch K-dramas with you, she’ll want more. Provide some toys that will stimulate her curiosity. High-energy kittens love to pounce and mimic catching prey, so interactive toys such as balls are excellent choices. Low-energy cats might prefer simply gnawing on a soft toy.

7. Brush

Although cats regularly groom themselves with their sandpapery tongues, they can use a little extra help from human hands. For cats with medium or long hair, it’s particularly important to brush their fur to prevent matting. You know how you fill a hairbrush when you get ready in the morning? Brushing your cat helps them shed loose fur and dead skin, too. Your cat will also look healthier and shinier, as brushing spreads the natural oils.

8. Bed

Maybe you don’t mind fur on your couch, but your guests might. Give your pet a bed of its own, so it’ll spend less time on the furniture. Because all cats scratch and bite, invest in something that will survive some abuse. Look for plush materials such as faux fur and fleece that are easily cleaned; it should be soft, with some padding. Older cats, like older folks, may appreciate extra cushioning such as memory foam.

9. Carrier

Have cat, will travel. Going on vacation or just on a trip to the vet, it’s a good idea to put your animal in a proper carrier. It not only provides protection but also helps them feel safe in unfamiliar surroundings. Choose a carrier that is just large enough for your cat to stand and turn around comfortably.

10. Collar

Even if your cat will live indoors full time, it should wear a collar. Felines know how to hustle, and that pizza delivery — aka open door — may be just the invitation they’ve been waiting for. Once your pet is outside, it could get lost, injured or confiscated by an eager 8 year old. A collar will help ensure your kitty makes it back home. Plus, the chance to wear a little bling? Yes!
