Camping RVs for exploring Utah

Are you a sucker for lakeside views in the Uintas? Or how about sunset dinners atop red rock mesas? Us too. If your ideal camping setup includes remote beauty but also a roof over your head and some rugged amenities, a camping RV may be right for you.

Wild west views with a roof over your head? Perfection.

But what RV type should you get? That depends on your family size, budget and adventure needs. We’ll help you choose the right one so you can have nature at your front door and enough room for the people and the gear you love.

5th wheel camping RVs

Nobody likes being a third wheel, but having a fifth wheel is great. These large RVs will be the most expensive option, but for good reason. The biggest ones have up to 700 square feet of space! If you have a towing truck, a large family and want a home away from home, a fifth- wheel trailer might be the way to go.

Larger RVs may have enough amenities for winter camping.

  • Safer towing: A fifth-wheel trailer places the weight of the trailer in the bed of your truck. This makes for more stable maneuvers while hauling your travel house out of town.

  • Space, space, space: Did we mention space? Great for extended stays, these have plenty of wiggle room with inclusions such as lofts or slideouts. You may be able to load some adventure gear such as kayaks or bikes into the trailer. Just make sure stuff is secure and doesn’t exceed the weight limit.

  • Many amenities: Sit down and stay awhile because you’ll be able to use the personal bathrooms, showers and kitchens that are usually found in a fifth wheel.

Bumper pull camping RVs

These appealing RVs are smaller and more versatile than a fifth wheel. You can haul them with a truck or any SUV with proper towing capabilities and a ball hitch mount. If you’re newer to RVing, these can be easier to tow due to their convenient size — often 100-300 square feet.

  • Manageable size: You’ll be able to navigate smaller areas and fit into more campgrounds with a less robust trailer. These are great for solo or couple campers and perhaps a dog or two.

  • Cost: You can find fixer uppers under $1,000 or spend around $30,000 for newer ones, but generally bumper pulls are more affordable.

  • Less intimidating: If you’re just getting into travel trailer camping, a bumper pull RV is a good start, with less to maintain and more flexible maneuvering.

Truck campers, motorhomes and camper vans

If you want everything attached, try one of these camper setups. A truck camper is placed in the bed of your truck — a good option if you have off-road gear to haul such as family mountain bikes. Motorhomes and camper vans are also great options if you want to haul gear behind you. Both options provide ample sleeping space and may have bathroom and shower setups.

Truck campers can still be quite spacious.

Off-road vehicles for Utah fun

Off-road rides are a great addition to your exploration ensemble, especially because Utah has a whopping 80,000 miles of off-highway vehicle trails. Both all-terrain vehicles and utility-terrain vehicles are a great way to cover serious ground on backcountry routes or have fun near your campground. You can find new and used ones on KSL Classifieds.

Remote and rugged, what more could an outdoorsy person dream of?

For solo rides or two person adventures, get an ATV — aka a four-wheeler. They're small and agile, making it easy to explore narrow trails through aspen trees or go wild over sand dunes in southern Utah.

A UTV is what many call a side-by-side. They’re robust, sturdy and great for small groups or families due to the extra seating and cargo space. UTVs have excellent off-road capability and can easily get you and your crew to backcountry campsites.
