Why you should try a recumbent bike

Working out while reclining may sound like an oxymoron, but this cycling style proves it can be done.

Need to exercise more, but prefer reclining in a comfy chair? Get a recumbent bike and you won’t have to choose. Not that riding one isn’t a workout, just a more pleasant one. KSL Classifieds looks at the benefits of riding a recumbent bike and why you may want to switch from your classic ride.

Weigh the facts

You may not have noticed when you were a kid, but the older you get the more you realize, riding a bike puts a lot of pressure on your sitting bones. And those tiny seats? Not helping any. On a recumbent bike, your weight is evenly distributed from your lower back through your quads. It’s like taking a load off, without even trying.

There’s also the benefit of better posture. On a road bike, you lean forward, putting pressure on your wrists and hands while hunching your shoulders. On a recumbent, your shoulders can relax in a natural position. This makes it an excellent option if you have joint pain or back problems. No more numb hands or knots in your shoulder blades.

Then there’s your neck. In order to see ahead of you on a road or mountain bike, you need to lift your head, which strains your neck and shoulder muscles. But with a recumbent, your head is already upright. The longer your rides are, the more pronounced these differences will become.

A reclining posture evenly distributes your weight, making for a more comfortable ride.

It’s not the climb

Recumbent bikes are ideal for relatively flat roads. Because you are sitting lower to the ground, the bike is generally more aerodynamic than a traditional bike. As a result, you’ll likely go faster with less effort.

However, because the bikes are usually heavier, recumbents aren’t ideal for hilly roads. If that’s the type of riding you prefer, opt for a lighter, front-wheel drive model. It will have a shorter chain, which will help you dig into your upper body strength to get moving uphill.

For traveling long distances, a recumbent bike may be ideal since you can go for hours without strain. With an electric motor assist, you can go even farther. Pack your lunch in a bike trailer and make a day of it.

Now you see me

Although recumbent bikes don’t stand as tall as upright bikes, riders suggest they are actually more visible to drivers. They look different, so they stand out to motorists. Still, it’s a good idea to add a bright flag and reflectors, particularly if you’ll be riding on main roads or in heavy traffic. And you should always invest in bike lights for night riding.

As a rider, with your head up, you can more easily look around. This gives you a broader view of the road and potential dangers.

In a tight spot

There are a couple of disadvantages to recumbent bicycles. First, due to their longer wheelbase, tight spaces can be difficult to navigate. Unlike a classic bike, you can’t quickly turn or maneuver between obstacles. That could be troublesome if you’re in congested areas, or when you come to anti-vehicle gates on city trails.

Secondly, the shape and size. The bike is heavier, longer and wider than a regular one. As a result, it may not fit on a traditional bike rack, so transporting it can be more challenging. It will also take up more space in your garage or on your balcony.

While comfortable for anyone, a recumbent exercise bike is a great option for people with mobility or balance issues.

Hitting the gym

If you prefer air conditioning to wind in your face, consider a gym equipment recumbent bike. You’ll still be getting a solid lower-body workout, using your large muscle groups to increase your mobility and decrease cookie calories. To get a full-body workout, you could pump some dumbbells while you’re pedaling. Two workouts at once.

The bike design is particularly suitable for anyone with mobility or balance issues. Seniors may especially appreciate the more comfortable positioning.

Perks of being a bike rider

All the benefits of bike riding apply to recumbent biking. Each time you hop on, you’ll not only burn calories, but also improve your circulation, get your heart and lungs working and reduce your risk of cardiovascular issues.

And, it can be done as often as you like. Plan to cycle for 30 to 60 minutes at least three to five times per week for the most health benefits.
