Lionel Chicago & Alton Steam Engine & 5 car passenger set. Beautiful high end set. This was the final premium steam passenger set made by Lionel/MPC in the 1970's. This is not a "cheapie set" made in China but was made in America by Americans, designed to last and pass down to future generations!

The correct defintion of value is long term build quality to begin with- and then reliable operation thereafter. Easily serviceable. Heirloom- "a valuable object that has belonged to a family for several generations. Unfortunately - we live in an age of "plastic ricky ticky" toys designed to self destruct in less than 5 minutes when played with. Quality costs less long term.

The Chicago and Alton was different than the Blue Comet and from the Southern Crescent it followed,..it was the most elaborate paint ever made to date. The Diecast metal engine and Diecast scale proportion tender cast with loads of rivets on the sides & wire handrails was like the quality of earlier Postwar Scale Hudsons.

Cars light up and have 6 wheel needlepoint axel sets with remote uncoupler operation for more weight and smooth operation- so does the rear of the coal tender. Operating smoke unit, electronic sound system with steam chuff and whistle. This was the last unit made in the USA. The other background items/buildings are not included as part of this sale.

The paint job is shiney deep maroon, red, silver and gold stripes. Stunning! looks and runs like new. Marx tinplate train station in picture is not included but offerred in another listing(sold it). Very light usage- a couple of laps around the Christmas Tree. Smoke free. Adult owned and operated. Original factory boxes and packaging.
