The novel was well-received by readers of the time. In the UK, it went through five editions in the first two months. Sales in the US took just three months before the fifth edition was published.
Details: A tale of adventure and romance set in the Sahara Desert. French Algiers and French Tunis. So popular, the book was later written into a stage play and then a screenplay for film. It was The basis for three movies, including the 1936 classic by David O. Selznik that starred Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer. The title also graced a famous Hotel on the Sunset Strip from the 1920's through the end of WWII.
