Desert Carpenter Ants (Camponotus sansabeanus) - $40 - seen in 6th picture
Black and orange desert carpenter ants. These beautiful ants are large, but slow growing at first. Mature colonies will produce majors/soldiers with orange bodies and striking black heads. A queen can be seen in the second picture. In test tube setup with sand. Must have heat to thrive. Queens with workers available.
Labor Day Ants (Lasius neoniger complex) - Queens with eggs available in a few weeks - seen in 7th picture
Another great beginniner species. They are yellowish-brown and queens are slightly larger than the American Yellow Meadow Ants. Sugar loving ants that are very active.
American Yellow Meadow Ants (Lasius breviconrus) - Queens with eggs available in a few weeks - seen in 9th picture
Another great beginniner species. These ants are small, grow quickly, love sugar, have great appetites, and are highly polygenous (capable of having multiple queens). These ants will overwinter and lay eggs in the spring.
Pavement Ants (Tetramorium immigrans) - OUT OF STOCK - seen in 3rd picture
This easy to care for ant is great beginners. They are quick growing, and are not picky eaters. Colonies will grow quickly and have a high success rate. Hibernation not required, but they will hibernate. Queens with workers available.
Bicolored Carpenter Ants (Camponotus vicinus) - OUT OF STOCK - seen in 4th picture
These large black and orangey red carpenter ants are part of the Camponotus vicinus species group, and grow to be some of the largest in Utah. Mature colonies will produce majors/soldiers. Slow growing at first. Must have heat to thrive. Queens with workers available.
Black Carpenter Ants (Camponotus vicinus) - OUT OF STOCK - seen in 2nd picture
Black carpenter ants part of the Camponotus vicinus species group. They grow to be some of the largest ants in Utah. Mature colonies will produce majors/soldiers. Slow growing at first. Must have heat to thrive.
Thatching Ants (Formica fusca group) - OUT OF STOCK
Mountainous black thatching ants. These ants are fast, predatory, and grow quickly. They are a good size, a bit smaller than carpenter ant workers, but very fun to observe due to their aggressive nature. Queens with workers available.
Thief Ants (Solenopsis species) - OUT OF STOCK - seen in 8th picture
Tiny golden thief ants. Heat loving ants that will grow quickly. High polygenous and can have multiple queens. In the wild these ants live in other ant colonies and use their size to avoid a conflict while stealing food and brood from the host colony. Will lay eggs in the spring.
Acrobat Ants (Crematogaster emeryana) - OUT OF STOCK - seen in 5th picture
These ants are active, great climbers, and grow quickly. These ants have quite interesting personalities and are named for their ability to raise their gaster straight in the air which they wiggle when threatened or under stress.
Big Headed Ants (Pheidole ceres) - OUT OF STOCK
These small desert ants will produce majors with heads larger than the standard worker. They will thrive with heat and respond in large numbers to protein.
Red Western Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis) - OUT OF STOCK
New queens of this species are semi-claustral and will need an outworld to forage in to feed their larvae until workers arrive.
The Western Red Harvester ant is an exciting species to observe. They're strong in their feeding response, collect and store seeds in their nest, and are not easily able to climb smooth surfaces like glass and plastic (as long as it is kept clean) making them an easier species to contain. They do however have a very potent sting, so making sure they're out of reach of children or pets which may knock over their nest is a must.
This species will require heat and humidity to really thrive. They can live entirely off of seeds for their protein and carbohydrate source so they're a great option if you're grossed out by feeding insect protein.
