Karen Carpenter lives and creates off grid in an old log Cabin in the mountains of Montana, She has this to say about her life and her work.
My artistic talents surface early in life, much to my mom’s chagrin, when I received my first box of crayons. It began a lifelong love affair with color. My formal education is limited to high school and a few college level night classes. Art is my way of expressing myself, and through that expression I learn who I am. I was not taught art: art taught me.
Art is a way of life. The human form has always been my greatest fascination because of the complexity and beauty of the human body. Learning to render it well has given me the ability to project t any subject that I can imagine. I work in many mediums; they are the tools for expressing my thoughts. Charcoal is a particular favorite because of the contract between the simplicity of black and white and the complexity of the detail.
It is as natural as breathing for me to be creative in the arts. I do not remember a time when it has not been a major driving force in my life. Intertwined into all of my experiences. Helping me to understand myself and the world around me.
