CashAppI first saw this on Shark Tank and thought it was a genius product (search “stormbag shark tank” on YouTube).
Since my garage is below street level, I wanted some of these sandbags (though not technically a bag filled with sand, the function is similar), because they wouldn’t (and don’t) take up much room in my emergency supplies and can be deployed quickly without much effort.
The motivation was because several years ago, my neighborhood received 2 inches of rain in just over an hour and I ended up with several inches of water in my garage (which is below street level) and it was starting to enter the house. I could’ve used Stormbags to stop the water from entering my garage and house. But now I’m ready in case it happens again.
An amusing story from that rain storm (though not for those involved), was from a neighbor that had a basement window well filled with so much water that it looked like an aquarium.
What follows is (mostly) from the Stormtec website:
The StormBag from Stormtec is a fast solution to a flood that doesn’t take up much space.
This innovative product is easily activated by submerging it in freshwater (like when your basement is flooding).
In just 3 to 5 minutes after putting it in water, it expands from a flat, 16 ounce bag to a filled one that weights an impressive 33 pounds.
The StormBag is lightweight, compact, and easy to transport, making it a convenient alternative to traditional sandbags.
In emergencies, time is precious. The StormBag is a valuable tool for unforeseen events.
Measures 23” x 13” (approximately 1” tall when dry and 6” tall when expanded)
Stormbags can also be used to keep your plants hydrated during drought conditions by placing several around them.
StormBags can be used to:
Soak up water after a pipe bursts or a bathtub overflows.
Prevent water from entering your basement windows during a severe rainstorm.
Barricade doorways into your house or garage during times of flooding.
Provide moisture for your plants if you’re not able to water while away on vacation.
NO SAND NEEDED
Stormbags are Made in the USA
Stormbags can be stored for reuse once they are completely dried out. The time it takes to fully dehydrate depends on the climate you are in. In low humidity (desert conditions) it takes an average of 2 weeks. In humid conditions it can take much longer. Expose to sun and frequently turn over to help speed up the process. Do not store while they are wet.
