Donna says: "I don't paint famous celebrities, I paint interesting people of all ethnicities," Corno said. "I intentionally clothe my subjects in a way that veils their culture, which makes them timeless and without boundaries."
Her paintings usually feature women and children and express the artist's interest in all ages and types of people.
"I hear one person say that the woman in the painting must be from Taiwan and then later another person will look at the same painting and say that the woman is from Mexico," Corno said. "I purposefully don't dress them traditionally to speak to more people this way. Whatever they bring to the experience affects their view."
Corno has been drawing figures since she was old enough to hold a crayon. She grew up in Southern California, where her mother recognized her talent and arranged art lessons for her when she was 8.
"I sold my first painting when I was only 13," Corno said. "I started with chalk pastels and then moved into oils."
Corno received a B.S. at BYU in Child Development and Family Relations, and later returned to BYU where she received her MFA in 2002. She taught at UVU for four years and now concentrates full-time on painting in her studio at home. She produces between 10 and 15 pieces a year.
"I paint the figure with an attitude in such a way that it evokes a reaction," Corno said. "I want people to feel something -- they will bring something to the painting, and it will be an experience unique to them.
