Josef Originals available:\
JOSEF ORIGINALS BRIEF HISTORY. Josef Originals was founded in 1945 by Muriel Joseph in Arcadia, California. She made Lucite jewelry; however, the cost of Lucite started rising during WWII, so she decided to make figurines. When her fiancee, Tom George, returned from WWII, he helped with Muriel’s business and the figurine line was born in 1946. They worked out of their garage and basement & quality over quantity was the company’s focus. The name “Josef” resulted from a printing error of her maiden name “Joseph”.
Muriel sold the company to George Good in 1982, though she stayed on as a designer. The production of Joseph Originals continued from 1982 to 1985 before the company was sold to Applause (Southland Corporation). The company was sold again in 2004 to Dakin. The most collectible pieces are those that were made during the ownership of Muriel with a high gloss finish & black eyes. Figurines made between 1960 - 1980 have a black oval sticker stating “Josef’s Originals” with a curly cue and an additional small black sticker reading Japan in script.
