VenmoThis is a Frankenstein typewriter—two machines combined into one, taking the best parts from each. Originally a German QWERTZ SM3, it's been converted to a standard American QWERTY layout with parts from a donor.
During the conversion, all of the typebars, along with the segment itself, were replaced, as were the keycaps.
If you want a collectible, look elsewhere. If you want a typewriter you can sit down and use to push out a rough draft, keep reading.
What's been done:
You might be asking, "Who did this work? Did they know what they were doing?"
I'm a hobbyist watchmaker, so I approached this like a movement service: full teardown, parts labeled, ultrasonic bath. For the segment, the conventional wisdom is "don't lubricate"—but that's really about avoiding WD-40, which leaves waxy residue. I used Moebius oil (the heavier grade for mainsprings), applied sparingly and precisely. The result: smooth action, no stickiness, snappy typebar return.
What works:
Everything functions as it should.
**Why I'm selling:**It takes up desk space, and my toddler won't leave it alone. She's destroyed one silk ribbon too many. I have way, way to many hobbies.
**Pricing context:**Comparable SM3s in this condition typically run $400+ online.
