Tribute to Clayton Johannes Perry 1917-1999. Early in Clayton’s life, Clayton’s father of 5 children owned ‘Perry’s Feed and Grain Store’ in Logan Utah. They were affluent. Just Prior to the depression, my grandfather entered into a contract with Logan lawyers to construct an irrigation canal on the west side of Cache Valley. Then the depression hit; he lost everything; his ‘Perry’s Feed and Grain Store’, large brick home, horses, carriages, wagons and their newest automobile with actual deluxe windows that rolled up! He was unable to support his family during the depression and felt disgraced. He packed his belongings and abandoned his family to work in California as a common laborer. He did not communicate with them after he left. Grandma Perry moved her family to Idaho Falls where she rented houses and took in boarders to feed and help pay the rent. As a boy, Dad collected coins delivering newspapers in Idaho Falls. It was natural to save his best coins to support his mother and 5 siblings. As he grew up, Dad watched the U.S. Government confiscate all gold and especially gold coins. My generation watched silver coins disappear in 1964. My father Clayton was highly intelligent and always learning and a silver hoarder. In 1938, 1963, 1964 and 1972 as the U.S. Treasury released bags of 1,000 uncirculated Morgan and Peace silver dollars, Clayton immediately invested his savings to purchase and stockpile Silver Dollars because of his earnest desire to build reserves in case of future economic collapses or bank failures. In 1998, at age 81, as dad prepared to die from cancer, he offered to sell his amassed silver coin collection to his children. I purchased all of the silver coins.
