The Silver Deathlayer (Westfälischer Totleger) is a rare, 400-year-old German heritage breed known for producing roughly 200–250 medium white eggs per year, often laying consistently until death. They are striking birds with silver/white plumage, black penciling, solid black eyes, and a, hardy, active, and somewhat flighty temperament.
Key Characteristics and Facts Egg Color: White. Egg Production: High; reported 4 eggs per week on average. Appearance: Silver hens have silvery-white feathers with black spots; roosters have white capes and black, iridescent tails. Temperament: Active foragers that can be skittish/flighty, often preferring to avoid handling, though they may be friendly with owners. Lifespan & Health: Known to lay well into old age, with good cold-hardiness and, usually, a, robust, disease-resistant nature. Size: Medium; hens weigh 3–4 lbs, roosters 5–6 lbs.
