ZelleCANNON, George Q. The Life of Joseph Smith, the Prophet. Salt Lake City: Juvenile Instructor Office, 1888.
First edition of one of the earliest and most influential 19th-century biographies of Joseph Smith, authored by prominent Latter-day Saint leader George Q. Cannon and published in Utah during a formative period of Church history.
Handsomely bound in period 3/4 leather over pebbled cloth boards, the upper cover elaborately gilt-stamped with decorative title panel, the spine likewise gilt with ornamental devices. The volume retains its engraved portrait plates of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, complete, and is further enhanced by vivid marbled endpapers.
Condition is very good for the period: honest wear to extremities, rubbing to leather and corners, scattered foxing and staining internally. Notwithstanding, the binding remains firm and structurally sound, with a solid text block and pleasing shelf presence.
An increasingly scarce and desirable first edition—a cornerstone work of early Latter-day Saint literature and Western American religious history.
