Hand made/woven sheep wool, size 104 in. by 68 in., has been in the family over 100 years.
These multiple purpose rug/blankets called Flokatis were made in early 20th century 1911 to1940 (This Flokatis is four rug/blankets, each 26 inch by 60 inch, combined into one.)
Flokatis were hand-made/woven around 1918 to 1928 in a village near Mount Olympus Greece. Made by a local Shepard’s wife and daughters as a gift to a family member immigrating to America after WWI
Around WWI, Flokatis were still being produced in their most authentic, rugged form. They weren't the bleached-white, fluffy accents you see in modern interior design; they were heavy, creamy-colored tools of the trade.
• Multipurpose Use: By the early 20’s to 30’s a shepherd's flokati served as a bed, a blanket, a floor covering and also a coat (capa). Its unique weave was designed to repel water and keep the wearer warm in the damp mountain air.
• The "Magic" of the Water: The defining characteristic of a flokati was the hydro-processing. After weaving, the rugs were placed in large wooden vats placed under waterfalls. The force of the water (not chemicals) caused the wool to felt and the "flock" (the long fibers) to bloom.
• Natural Materials: These rugs were made from 100% unspun hand sheared sheep’s wool. There were no synthetic dyes or backings. The lanolin remained in the wool, making the rugs naturally soil-resistant and surprisingly heavy.
