ZelleSheldon WM-56-P Metal Lathe
Specs:
13-1/8" swing; 34" between centers; 1,520lb. 3HP single-phase motor; currently wired for 230V, but can also be configured for 115V. Runs both in forward and reverse. L00 spindle nose (much more accurate than threaded spindles and can be run in reverse). 1-3/8" through hole, short #5 MT spindle taper; #3MT tailstock taper. Thread pitches: cuts 4 to 240 teeth per inch (TPI) with quick-change gearbox.
Lathe is already loaded onto a trailer. Willing to include trailer in purchase (4'x8', load capacity of 1,720 lb) for extra.
The Good: Sheldon lathes are generally considered to be a step up from Southbend/Logan/Atlas. I make parts on this lathe to tolerances less than 0.001". Not only is it very accurate, but the lathe has the power and rigidity to take very aggressive cuts and remove material very quickly without chatter or bogging. The drivetrain includes a Worthington drive which continuously varies the spindle speed from 40 to 2000 rpm; because it's a mechanical drive you gain massive torque at low speeds (unlike electronic speed control which loses torque at low speed). The lathe comes equipped with a full set of accessories (see list below). No broken gear teeth. Everything works as it should (except the flood coolant pump, see below). Pedestal stand includes a convenient storage cabinet under the tailstock. Manual available for free on VintageMachinery.org.
The Bad: Paint is in poor condition. Next, the lathe originally came equipped with a flood coolant system; the coolant tank and motor are still present (and in good working order), but the impeller pump is missing; a replacement is available from Graymills (the original pump manufacturer), but was rather expensive when I inquired. Next, the motor compartment door is missing. Lastly, I equipped the lathe with a 2-axis DRO but didn't get around to attaching the Z-axis read-head to the carriage.
