Gibson RB-100 banjo, S/N 525563, 1975. Like a Gibson Mastertone (one piece flange, dual coordinator rods) but with rolled brass tone hoop instead of heavy tone ring. THE GOOD: Fun to play. Crisp attack. Can be very loud when you want it. Versatile sound – plunky near the neck, hard and bluegrassy by the bridge. Slender, comfortable neck. Nice rosewood on fingerboard. Decent looking resonator. THE BAD: Although very playable, frets are showing their age and might not support another crown / polish. THE UGLY: About a one-inch crack on bottom of heel – see photo. Might be just the surface finish or might be the wood– a pro would remove the neck to assess but I am letting sleeping necks lie – have played this banjo regularly for a couple of years and it seems stable. MISC: Spikes on 5th string at frets 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Slightly banged up but sturdy hard case. Leather strap in photos NOT included. BOTTOM LINE: A diamond in the rough. Serious inquiries only, please - message if you are interested. $800, cash only (my local police department has a handy Safe Exchange Zone where we can meet).
