If you're familiar with the name, you know these things are handcrafted in Germany and as you would expect, last forever. Essentially the Mercedes-Benz of the English riding world. This specific one - Modell 144306 - was handcrafted in Hannover before 1986, back when they really put the time into the leatherwork. It’s in really good shape, and I’ve spent the time conditioning the leather and keeping it covered so it's still soft and ready to ride.
It’s an 18-inch seat (I measured it myself). I know the Western saddles are popular, but these "European" saddles are so much lighter and give you a way better feel for the horse. Plus, it’s actually better for learning to ride the right way. Without a horn, you don't develop those bad habits like choking the horn when things get bumpy. If you are an adult and want a more comfortable ride or you are learning, use this saddle, and you simply can’t “grab the apple” - It forces you to have better balance and put your weight where it should be.
Here's everything it comes with (which is a lot more than usual):
- The Saddle: Features the famous PS-BAUM (Polystahl) flexible saddle tree (made of bamboo and steel). Quality that Passier is known for—really easy on the horse's back.
- Saddle Size: Measures 18 inches from the pommel button to the back rim. Considered a Large/Extra- Large size saddle, which is typically great for adult riders.
- The Extra Tack: Includes the leather straps, both stirrups (just polished them!), and the girth.
- The Breastplate: This is the leather 3-point strap setup with the ring—great for keeping the saddle from sliding.
- Red Bag: A big red bag to keep it in so it doesn't get dusty in the barn.
- More Extras: A saddle pad and a cool old-school white "dome helmet. The helmet lining is old from the heat, so don’t wear it for safety, but it looks awesome on a shelf.
Asking $450 for the whole lot. (This quality saddle, new, ranges from $4800-$5500 and is missing the extras)
This is a perfect setup for a tall rider or an adult learner, or someone looking to switch over from western for style's comfort's sake.
