An extraordinary, authentic Sergio Bustamante (Mexican, b. 1949) mid-century modern hanging sculpture. This investment-grade piece of Mexican folk art features a large, life-sized toucan perched on a substantial metal hoop, with a whimsical monkey suspended below. Crafted during the 1970s–1980s in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, this work showcases Bustamante’s signature "brutalist" mixed-metal style. The toucan is meticulously constructed with overlapping copper and brass sheets to create a feathered texture, while the monkey features an expressive, hand-etched face and glass/stone inlaid eyes. Artist: Sergio Bustamante Era: Circa 1970s–1980s Materials: Hand-soldered Brass and Copper Design: Toucan on a hanging ring with a separate detachable/hanging monkey Provenance: This is a classic example of Bustamante’s early metalwork, which preceded his later ceramic and resin series. Condition: Excellent vintage condition overall. The piece retains a rich, original aged patina. Please note: there is evidence of minor historical repair work consistent with the age of large-scale vintage metalwork; these professional touch-ups are stable and do not detract from the beauty or display value of the piece. All structural welds are secure.
