PayPalBeautiful old 4/4 violin labeled Mathias Hornsteiner 1872. Professionally set up and ready to play with brand new Thomastik-Infeld Dominant strings and a new Pirastro Gold Label E string.
This violin is in remarkable condition for its age. Inspection of the interior shows no repairs made like, patches, or cleats. Neck projection measures exactly 27 mm with a 34 mm bridge height, providing the correct string angle and excellent projection—unlike many vintage violins that suffer from low neck angles and reduced volume. String action at the end of the fingerboard measures 5 mm on the G string and 4 mm on the E string.
This Mathias Hornsteiner II violin is an excellent Mittenwald example of high-level craftsmanship. Mathias Hornsteiner II was known as "Dax" died in 1803 was the most distinguished maker of the family. His son Mathias Hornsteiner III ‘Gratzs’ carried on making violins under his name. A number of these were hand made using stunning wood and very exceptional craftsmanship.
This is a fantastic violin to play. It has guts where you want it and is brilliant and very responsive. The sound is very mature, a strikingly opulent instrument with a great response off the strings. The sustain and clarity of sound also makes me notice the violin. The overtones are warm and full of color; not black and white. This is an exciting instrument to strike with a bow. As a player, I had a big smile when just playing the violin this one will be hard to let go. In tonal character the violin has a warm, mature tonal range. This is not a beginner violin this is for an expert level player IMO. It will be difficult to part with.
