VenmoI went to buy this bike in South Jordan yesterday... from a seller named Melissa on KSL. When I got there I took a quick spin on the bike and--despite needing a light tune up, it seemed OK so I paid for it and the seller quickly went back inside her house... but when I was loading it up I noticed that the non-drive-side chainstay had a big, gnarly crack in it... making the frame un-safe to ride--and the bike essentially worth only what the parts on it are worth (a couple of hundred bucks).
I texted the seller and she came back out and acted shocked and amazing and quickly agreed to Venmo the money back to me. She said she had no idea that the frame was broken... which seemed kind of incredible... but took her at her word.
I drove 1/2 and hour across the valley to check out / pick up the bike... and another 1/2 hour back home. 1/4 tank of gas @ $80/tank.
But here's how I NOW know that SHE knew about the cracked frame all along... and is just hoping that someone doesnt notice it until it's too late... and they've got the bike home... maybe have taken a ride or two on it... and can't return it:
She hasn't changed the listing... or removed it from KSL.
https://classifieds.ksl.com/listing/81256334
Same exact listing. Same price. No mention of the cracked frame. Nada.
So... I ask you... if YOU were selling a bike and YOU didn't know it was damaged--and someone pointed it out to you when they came to buy it... would YOU not delete or change the listing to disclose that damage???
I've bought and sold many a bike (and countless other items) on KSL and FB marketplace over the years... and 95% of the people I've dealt with were decent, honest people. So I've gotten a bit lazy about REALLY checking things closely--or being TOO suspicious. But it only takes ONE shady person to undermine your faith in humanity and make your cynical again. :(
Anyway... (1) If you're interested in this Roubaix--be aware that the frame is SEVERLY cracked and the cost to "repair" would be more than the bike is worth... and (2) always THOROUGHLY examine any bike you are buying--particularly carbon fiber bikes... because you can't always trust the people selling them to be honest and have integrity.
