An exceptional late-19th-century French Louis XVI Revival bed crafted from solid walnut with remarkably crisp hand carving throughout. This is a complete bed retaining its original side rails, original hardware, and original finish.
The headboard features an exquisitely carved classical cameo medallion framed by flowing ribbonwork and laurel garlands, while the footboard displays an elaborate carved oval medallion with two birds perched upon a flaming torch—an iconic neoclassical symbol representing enduring love and fidelity.
During disassembly, original French shipping labels and handwritten markings were discovered on the interior, including references to Grenoble, France and the historic address:
2 Rue Vicat 38000 Grenoble, France
These original labels strongly support the bed’s French origin and period.
Unlike many surviving examples, this bed remains remarkably complete.
