Commercial Aquaponic System – Deep Water Culture / Raft System

Large commercial-style aquaponic system removed from a local greenhouse that needed more plant production space.

This is a true recirculating aquaponic system designed for both fish and vegetable production using deep water culture (DWC) raft beds.

System Overview

The system was designed so water flows naturally and efficiently:

• Water exits from the bottom of the fish tanks\
• Flows into two sediment filtration tanks\
• Filtered nutrient-rich water then moves into the large DWC raft grow bed\
• At the end of the grow bed, the plants and biological activity naturally clean/filter the water\
• The filtered water then returns back to the fish tanks

The beauty of aquaponics is the simplicity: The only regular inputs to the system are:

• Fish food\
• Chelated iron

Fish waste feeds the plants, and the plants help clean the water for the fish.

This setup can produce a significant amount of:

• Lettuce\
• Herbs\
• Leafy greens\
• Vegetables\
• Tilapia or trout
