History & Age
This lamp is a mid-century (circa 1950s–1960s) American revival piece. The design is directly cast "after" the famous 19th-century French Renaissance and Art Nouveau sculptures by Hippolyte François Moreau (H. Moreau). During the mid-20th century, companies like the Continental Art Company, Pieri, and Florence Art mass-produced these grand European-style statue lamps out of chalkware or plaster composite to bring old-world Parisian elegance into mid-century American living rooms.
How It Was Aged
The age of this piece was determined by a few distinct historical clues:
Material and Wear: The specific way the statue has chipped on the nose and base reveals a dense plaster/chalkware composition underneath the metallic paint. This is standard for 1950s–1960s decorative lamps, whereas late-1800s originals were cast in heavy zinc alloy (spelter) or bronze.
Scale & Utility: Integrating a classical 24-inch French salon statue into a massive 44-inch functional electric household table lamp is a textbook design signature of mid-century lighting manufacturers.
Hardware: The style of the socket cluster and the thick, stiff original insulation on the cord are typical of mid-20th-century manufacturing.
