John is a 19 year old, 16+ hand draft cross who truly is the definition of a gentle giant. He has the sweetest personality and is the kind of horse that everyone falls in love with.
Earlier in his life, John worked as a dude ranch horse, and since then he has been used extensively for trail riding, hunting, and plenty of leisurely rides. He has also done light arena work with my 10 year old daughter, but I wouldn’t call him an arena or 4H horse. He has a wonderfully smooth, rocking-chair lope that is incredibly comfortable.
The only reason we’re considering finding him a new home is because life has changed a bit. My focus is helping my daughter pursue her riding goals, and I simply don’t have the time to give John the attention he deserves. He’s far too nice of a horse to spend his days standing in the pasture.
John is excellent for the farrier, stands quietly, and is generally easy to handle. He’s about middle of the pecking order in the herd. He had his teeth floated about a year ago, receives his annual 5-way vaccinations, and has been dewormed every six months.
His only real quirk is that he can occasionally be a little stubborn about being caught, but a few treats usually change his mind very quickly. He also has a small bump on one knee that has never affected his soundness or ability to do his job. I have given him butte preemptively on longer rides when we haven’t ridden in some time, just in case but I don’t really think he needs it. He’s the same horse after sitting for 2 weeks or 1 year. He’s the kind your whole family can love and enjoy.
If you’re looking for a kind, trustworthy, experienced horse with a calm disposition and a wealth of trail experience, John is truly a special one. Finding the right home for him is our top priority.
