VenmoThis is Ava, our beautiful 5-year-old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd.
We’ve had Ava since she was six months old, and this has been an incredibly difficult decision. She is a wonderful dog and a beloved member of our family. The reason we’re considering rehoming her isn’t because she’s a “problem dog”—it’s because we don’t feel we’re able to give her the life she truly deserves.
With young children and a busy season of life, we simply can’t provide the time, and companionship that a working-bred Australian Shepherd thrives on.
Ava currently has a large yard to run in, another Aussie to play with (he is low drive), and daily exercise, but we’ve realized that physical activity alone isn’t enough for her. She is happiest when she has something to do and her people nearby. She absolutely loves being with her family and is a loyal, affectionate companion.
We’re hoping to find someone experienced with working dogs who wants Ava as an active daily partner—a dog who lives with them, works with them, learns with them, and is included as part of the family. A companion on a farm, ranch, active home, or someone interested in agility, obedience, or other dog sports would be an excellent fit.
About Ava:
5 years old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd ASCA registered 35 lbs Spayed Embark health tested and cleared House trained Well-trained and highly intelligent High-drive and eager to work Very athletic Calm and well-mannered indoors when her exercise and mental needs are met Loves being with her people (“Velcro dog”) Good with our children Good with other dogs Previously had four healthy litters and was an excellent mother
Things to Know:
We want to be completely honest so she finds the right home. (But please note that many of these behaviors are a result of her need for more engagement.)
Like many herding breeds, Ava has nipped at strangers when she’s become overstimulated. Because of this, she’ll do best with an experienced owner who understands herding dog behavior and can continue providing structure and training.
She has killed free-ranging chickens when left unsupervised, so she should not be trusted around loose poultry.
Currently, Ava spends much of her time outside with our other Australian Shepherd. She gets daily exercise and enjoys running, but what she truly craves is consistent interaction and mental stimulation. When she isn’t mentally fulfilled, she’ll bark to get attention or ask to come out of her kennel. She isn’t looking for just a yard—she’s looking for purpose and companionship.
This is one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make, and we’re committed to finding the very best home for her. We will be selective because we love her deeply and want this to be her forever home. If, for any reason, the placement doesn’t work out, we ask that she be returned to us rather than rehomed again.
We would also love to stay in touch with her new family. Our children adore Ava and would love to see photos and hear updates about how she’s doing.
If you have experience with Australian Shepherds or other herding breeds and think Ava might be the right fit for your family or lifestyle, we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out and tell us a little about yourself and the home you could offer her.
Our goal isn’t simply to find Ava another home—it’s to find her the right home.
