VenmoI bought this awhile ago to restore, but I’ve had to come to the conclusion that I just don’t have the time or energy to do it, and probably won’t for the next 10 years 😂
I don’t know a whole lot about what this is, but I do know that it is made of mahogany and that the paint is original. The original function of this piece is unknown, and my best guess (well… ChatGPT’s best guess) is that it was likely used in the following possible ways:
1. It was a watchmaker’s cabinet and was used to hold delicate gears.
2. It was used by a jeweler and the drawers held valuable pieces while the jeweler displayed others on the glass top.
3. It belonged to a dentist who would store their instruments inside the drawers.
4. It was an optician’s trial case that would carry different corrective glass lenses, prisms and specialized accessories.
5. It was a microscope accessory case that would safely hold fragile pieces or other scientific instruments.
It most likely was carried to and from appointments and was used to display and hold pieces while the professional worked.
There is (obviously) wear to the paint and some damage to the wood. It’s also missing a small knob on one of the side pieces and a few small screws are missing for the hinges on that same side. The original felt is in the bottom of the drawers (some don’t have the felt, but it looks like they might have always been that way because there’s no glue residue on the wood). The glass on top has no cracks but does have some scratches. I looked at the bottom for a maker’s mark but can’t find anything. It does include a few looped pins that come in and out of the metal holes. It measures approximately 17.75” long, 15” wide and 4.5” tall. It’s pretty heavy for its size and weighs approximately 13 lbs.
I couldn’t find anything that looked like this piece online, but ChatGPT estimated that something like this would be valued between $150-400 in its current condition. Restored, it could go anywhere from $600-1500.
